Baptism Is an Act of Obedience
Baptism is a command given by Jesus to His followers. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, NIV). Baptism is an act of obedience, publicly demonstrating faith in Christ.
Baptism Symbolizes Identification With Christ
Through baptism, believers identify with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:4, NIV). It signifies dying to sin and rising to a new life in Christ.
Baptism Is an Expression of Faith
Baptism is not a means of salvation but a public expression of faith in what God has done. “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” (Acts 2:41, NIV). It is a testimony of commitment and belief in Jesus.
Baptism Is for Believers
The Bible shows that baptism is for those who have personally believed in Jesus. “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.’” (Acts 2:38, NIV). Infant baptism is not described in Scripture; baptism follows personal faith.
Baptism Is a Public Declaration
Baptism proclaims to the world that the believer belongs to Christ. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20, NIV). It is an outward sign of an inward transformation through the Holy Spirit.
Baptism and Community
Baptism also signifies entrance into the community of believers, the body of Christ. “For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (1 Corinthians 12:13, NIV). It connects the believer with the global family of God.
Living Out Baptism
Baptism is a step of faith, obedience, and public commitment to follow Jesus. It symbolizes death to sin, new life in Christ, and union with the body of believers. As Romans 6:4 reminds us, baptism calls us to live continually in the power and victory of Christ’s resurrection.
