The Works of God: What He Has Done and Continues to Do

Scripture Reading: Psalm 111:2–3 — “Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious and majestic are His deeds, and His righteousness endures forever.”

The Wonder of God’s Works

The works of God are the visible expressions of His invisible nature. They reveal His power, wisdom, love, and glory throughout creation and redemption. From the first words of Genesis to the final visions of Revelation, the Bible is a record of what God has done and continues to do. Every act bears His signature, and every work reflects His heart.

Psalm 111 invites us to ponder the works of the Lord — to study, remember, and delight in them. God’s works are not confined to history; they continue in the present and reach into eternity. The same God who formed the heavens still sustains the earth, still redeems lives, and still writes stories of grace every day. His works are perfect, purposeful, and personal.

The Work of Creation

God the Creator

Scripture: Genesis 1:1 — “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

All of creation begins with God’s voice. He spoke, and light appeared. He commanded, and galaxies came into being. Every atom, star, and living soul exists because of His creative will. Creation is not random; it is intentional — a masterpiece declaring the glory of its Maker. Nature is God’s first revelation of His majesty, a visible hymn of praise to His power and order.

To know God as Creator is to recognize that we are His handiwork, formed with purpose and meaning. The beauty of creation reflects His artistry, and its order reflects His wisdom. When we marvel at the sky, the sea, or a single heartbeat, we are witnessing the ongoing work of the Creator who said, “It is good.”

The Sustaining Power of God

Scripture: Colossians 1:17 — “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

God did not step back after creating the universe; He continues to sustain it by His word. Every breath we take, every sunrise we see, and every law of nature that holds true is evidence of His sustaining hand. Without Him, creation would unravel. His works are not past tense — they are alive in every moment, holding the universe together and guiding all things according to His will.

The Work of Providence

God’s Sovereign Guidance

Scripture: Proverbs 16:9 — “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

Providence is God’s continuous care over creation — His quiet orchestration of events toward His purposes. Nothing happens by accident. From the rise and fall of nations to the smallest details of our lives, His hand is at work. Even when we cannot trace His steps, we can trust His heart.

Through providence, God weaves every circumstance — even suffering — into a greater plan. What seems chaotic to us is carefully ordered by His wisdom. Joseph declared this truth when he said to his brothers, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). The same God still works all things for good to those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

The Work of Redemption

God the Redeemer

Scripture: John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

The greatest of all God’s works is the work of redemption — His plan to save humanity from sin through Jesus Christ. The cross stands at the center of all history, where God’s justice and mercy met. Creation reveals His power, but redemption reveals His heart. Through the blood of Jesus, He bought our freedom, restored our relationship with Him, and defeated sin and death forever.

Redemption is not merely an event in the past; it is an ongoing work in the lives of believers. God continues to redeem, restore, and renew those who turn to Him. His grace transforms hearts daily, proving that His saving power is as active now as it was at Calvary.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

Scripture: Titus 3:5 — “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Spirit continues the work that Jesus began — regenerating hearts, sanctifying believers, and empowering the Church. He convicts the world of sin, comforts the brokenhearted, and equips God’s people to live in truth. The Spirit’s presence is proof that God’s work is ongoing and personal. We are not only saved by grace; we are shaped daily by it.

The Work of Sanctification

God Making Us Holy

Scripture: Philippians 1:6 — “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Sanctification is God’s work of transforming believers into the likeness of Christ. It is a process — steady, patient, and powered by grace. Through His Word, His Spirit, and the trials of life, God refines our hearts and renews our minds. The same hands that formed us are now shaping us for eternity.

Growth in holiness is not achieved by willpower but by surrender. As we yield to His Spirit, He replaces pride with humility, fear with faith, and selfishness with love. The work of sanctification proves that God not only saves us — He perfects us in His time.

The Work of Judgment and Restoration

God the Righteous Judge

Scripture: Psalm 96:13 — “He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness.”

God’s works also include judgment — the righteous response of His holiness to sin. His judgments are not arbitrary; they are expressions of perfect justice. Through judgment, He upholds righteousness and exposes truth. The final judgment will bring the restoration of all things, when every wrong is made right and every tear is wiped away (Revelation 21:4).

God the Restorer

Scripture: Revelation 21:5 — “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’”

The last great work of God will be the full renewal of creation — a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells. The God who began with “Let there be light” will end with eternal glory. Every scar will become a testimony of grace, and every sorrow will turn to joy. His restoration will complete the story of His works — perfect, eternal, and good.

Responding to the Works of God

God’s works reveal not only His power but His love. From the forming of the stars to the saving of a soul, every act displays His glory. To know His works is to know His heart — creative, redemptive, and faithful. As believers, our response should be worship, wonder, and witness.

When we reflect on His works, our faith is strengthened. When we remember His redemption, our hearts overflow with gratitude. And when we recognize His ongoing work in our lives, we find courage to trust Him for the future. The same God who spoke creation into existence is still speaking life into us today.

Let every day become an opportunity to echo the psalmist’s words: “Come and see what God has done, His awesome deeds for mankind” (Psalm 66:5). For the works of God are not confined to the pages of history — they live in the hearts of all who believe.
